UV bulb for drop light

Postby buickwagon » Sun Jul 01, 2012 5:59 pm

At some time or another someone suggested using a black light bulb in the drop light to help show up the leak from the UV dye. I tried one and was unimpressed -- the dye shows up better in sunlight. To be fair, I didn't have the fancy goggles.

Yesterday I was in Canadian Tire and noticed one of those 13w compact florescent bulbs in a black light. What the heck, it was only $8, may as well give it a try. It works great! I shone it on the rag I used the other day and the little dots from the brief Phssst of cracking the hose connection light up like a panorama of stars.

So, if you want to use the drop light for leak detection, forget the incandescent bulb and get the CF version.
